John's 15 Search Engine Registration Tips
To Make Your Site Stand Out Among the Rest
by John Doyle
Observe these registration tips, and your ranking on the Search Engines could be higher (meaning YOUR site could be listed within the first three screens of the search results):
- Use keywords in your title, as most search engines weigh these heavily in their ranking system.
- Use the plural of your keyword (not engine, but engines.) This way if a person looks for either engine or engines your page will be pulled up.
- Try to use BOTH upper and lower case spellings of your keywords. (Search, SEARCH, search) This will help when a person enters upper OR lower case keywords.
- Use combinations of your keywords because people generally search using phrases containing two or more keywords (e.g. Search Engine Registrations, SEARCH ENGINE REGISTRATIONS, search engine registrations) also using upper and lower case letters and the plural of each word.
- Use meta tags. Many of the search engines use meta tags. Using them will help your page rankings on the search engines that use them. Your meta tags go inside the header tags on your page and can only be seen in the HTML of your page, not in the display.
- Use a good combination of your 10 to 20 best keywords.
- Use keywords in the text of your page. A keyword rich text is often the deciding factor in your page ranking higher or lower.
- Try to use a keyword at the start of each paragraph.
- Use your keywords in the other heading tags on your page.
- Use your keywords or phrases early in the text of your site.
- Use the ALT tag in your image links and fill these with keyword rich text.
- Every page of your site should be registered with the search engines, not just the title page.
- Keep your content fresh, as many of the search engines will re-index your site periodically and if there has been no change you may actually loose positioning.
- Do not keyword spam. This is a technique that many people have used in the past to help gain good placement. It is done by repeating your keywords over and over and then changing the color of the text to match the background of the page. Many of the search engines will penalize you if they catch you doing this.
- Customize your page to suit each of the major search engines. This will take time but once done can greatly improve your rankings on the individual engines. (Also, if possible, create a page with ALL your keywords, used in various ways, and register THAT page...linking IT to your other pages.)
