Genesis 37:2 -- These were the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being 17 years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren ..... and Joseph brought unto his father "their" evil report.

"their" -- (I Samuel 2:22 -, 23, 24 -- The Family, Parents & Children, Parental Indulgence, In the Case of Eli)

Question -- Food for Thought --- How many parents "really" listen to their children?

Genesis 37:3 -- The Family, Family Affections, Parents & Children, Favorite Children

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all of his children, because he was "the" son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many "colours."

"the" -- Genesis 44:20 -- The Family, Family Affections, Parents & Children, Favorite Children

"colours" -- pieces (Judges 5:3 -- Civil & Social Life, God Rules Over All, Deborah & Barak song)

Food For Thought -- If we do have favorite children, etc., we need to work on hiding it from the other siblings-children-grandchildren, etc., or work on some plan to keep things peaceable -- for we do not need any ill/evil feelings rising up in the family.

Verses 5,6,7,8,9,10

And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

For "behold," we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood round about, and made obesiance to my sheaf.

"behold" -- Genesis 42:6 -- Civil & Social Life, Regal Government, Regal Authority in Egypt, With Plenary Power

Genesis 37:8,9,10

And his brethren said to him, shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us?

And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, "the" sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

"the" -- Genesis 46:29 -- The Family, Family Affections, Parents & Children, Love to Children

obeisance -- bow, movement of the body as showing respect

And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and "thy" brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

"thy" -- Genesis 27:29 -- The Family, Parents & Children, The Blessing Stolen in Consequence

Genesis 37:11,19,20,21,24 -- The Family, Brethren, Hated & Injured by Brethren

And "his" brethren envied him; but his father "observed" the saying.

"observed" -- Daniel 7:28

Daniel 7:28 -- Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

(Real Life 101 -- If I/you/me keep the matter in our heart who knows what it is? -- Now if Joseph would have kept the matter in his heart his brothers would not have known his dream(s) and it could have kept down the hatred .. maybe and maybe not)

Genesis 37:19,20,21,24

And they said one to another, Behold, this "dreamer" cometh.

"dreamer" -- master of dreams

Jacob-Israel was a dreamer

"Come" now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

"Come" -- Proverbs 27:4 -- Sins Against our Neighbor, Envy, Wrath -- cruelty and anger an overflowing Envy -- jealousy

And "Rueben" heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

"Rueben" -- Genesis 42:22 -- Works of God, God's Providence in Moral Discipline, Conscience Punishes

(Real Life 101 -- I would not only call Rueben a brother but a real friend who would stand for right in a critical situation)

Genesis 37:24

And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

Genesis 37:23 -- The Outward Man, Body Clothed, Removal of Dress

And it came to pass, when Joseph was come into his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many "colours" that was on him,

"colours" -- pieces

Genesis 37:27 -- Come and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh.

Ishmeelites -- Abraham & Hagar family line (Genesis 16:15)

Genesis 37:28 -- Masters and Servants, Joseph sold twice

Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pices of silver: and they brought Joseph out of Egypt.
