How To Select A Consultant

Consultants can clear roadblocks you meet in your home business. You may need an expert on targeting your market, trimming your operating budget, or launching your home business. The right outside specialist gives you an unbiased view of your home business, clearing the way to success. Adopt the following strategies to ensure you get the most from a consultant.

Understand The Consultant's Role. The consultant is an advisor, not a miracle worker. Be leery of anyone promising "quick fixes." A consultant doesn't have all the answers. He or she just knows where to find them. A consultant knowledgeable in your industry or field offers you the most potential.

Identify Your Needs. This is not a fishing expedition. Determine exactly what you want to accomplish. The more specific you are, the better. Set objectives for your home business to discuss with a consultant, such as "to increase sales by 10% this quarter." Know What You Are Willing To Commit To. This includes everything from information (records, background, accounting), to employees, to home office space and to equipment. Prepare this commitment list in advance to accelerate the progress and to reduce costs of the consultant.

Establish Fees Up Front. Consultant fees can be charged by the job, on an hourly or monthly basis or by results. Establish these fees so you know the costs you face versus the benefits expected.

Develop A List Of Questions. These questions are used to interview prospective consultants. At a minimum, establish their experience in the industry, ask questions related to the task to be assigned, and get references.

Put It In Writing. The consultant will prepare an agreement that spells out the terms of your arrangement. The agreement should include the consultant fees, the services to be rendered, and the start/end dates. Have your attorney review it
