You know who you are: You open the latest issue of a newsletter, skim, check out the article, skim, look for your ad, skim, check out any tips, skim and delete!
Sound familiar? Probably most people are guilty of skimming at least some of the time (I'm being generous). But if you are skimming, you're missing a golden opportunity to see what your competition is doing. What competition? The people who are promoting the same programs as you.
I've found that if I promote programs that aren't showing up in all the free and classified sections of newsletters, I'll get far more referrals and sign ups than if I'm just one of the thundering hoard! I've also found great ads that inspire me to be more imaginative in my own ad writing. If an ad makes me want to check it out, that's a good ad! If I can figure out why it appealed to me, I can use that to appeal to others. (Please don't just copy ads, that defeats the whole purpose of standing out from the thousands of hopeful promoters)
So stop skimming, start paying attention, and you'll discover what a great resource those ads can be
